• Leave the heating on a low setting to prevent pipes freezing and then bursting, unless your insurer specifies otherwise.

• Arrange for post to be collected on a daily basis - this will deter most opportunist burglars 

• Keep a light run by a timer somewhere in the premises, which is obvious from the outside 

Ensure you engage all locks and security devices including alarms

• Notify neighbouring businesses; help each other keep premises secure

• Remove cash and valuables to a safe location

• If you consider your premises to be particularly vulnerable, advise the local Police of your closing times

• Close all internal doors - this can greatly reduce the spread of a fire

• Unplug all non-essential electrical equipment

• Cancel the milk - and put the cat out!
